12th IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship: Nitu qualifies for the quarter-finals MIGMG News


2017 Junior World Champion Nitu (48kg) continued her good form and qualified for the quarter-finals of the 12th edition of the IBA Women’s Boxing Championships, defeating Spain’s Lopez del Arbol by unanimous decision on Saturday.

Neto, who won gold at the Strandja Memorial Boxing Championships in Sofia this year, dominated the proceedings from the start. The Bhiwani boxer showed relentless energy and showed off her impressive footwork and speed in delivering precise punches.

Neto raised her ante in the next two rounds and continued her offensive approach without giving any chance to her opponent and convincingly won the match 5-0.

Her next opponent will be Aloa Balibekova of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals on Monday.

Later on Saturday evening, Manisha (57kg) will take on Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva.

On Sunday, six Indian boxers including Nikat Zarin will participate in the round of 16.

Nikat (52kg) and Sheksha (54kg) will next meet Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg of Mongolia and Asian Youth Bronze Medalist Yesugen Oyuntsetseg respectively while Parveen will meet former Youth Olympic champion Jajaira Gonzalez of the USA.

World Championship bronze medalist Anamika (50kg) will face Christy Lee Harris of Australia, while Jesmine (60kg) will face Australian Angela Harris.

Meanwhile, 2017 World Youth Champion Ankushita (66kg) will make her World Elite Championship debut against Poland’s Anita Regelska.

This year’s event, which marks the 20th anniversary of the IBA Women’s World Championships, will run through May 20.

In the last edition of the tournament held in Russia in 2019, Indian boxers won one silver and three bronze medals.

Indian boxers have won 36 medals, including nine gold, eight silver, and 19 bronze, in 11 previous editions of the tournament, the third-highest after Russia (60) and China (50). In the last edition held in Russia in 2019, the Indians won one silver and three bronze medals.
