New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation Farhad Suri has termed the bulldozer operation in Jehangirpuri as illegal and demanded action against the commissioner and mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Speaking to UNI on Wednesday, Farhad Suri termed the bulldozer operation run by the corporation in Jahangirpuri as illegal. He said that in case of action against illegal constructions, notice must be issued under section 343/344 of DMC Act. The victim is then given an opportunity to present his case. Today’s operation has violated the rules. For this illegal action, action should be taken against the top officials including the commissioner of North Delhi Municipal Corporation who are involved in it.

He said that BJP’s Delhi state president Adish Gupta had ordered the mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation to take action in the affected area. In what capacity did Adish Gupta issue such an order which was accepted by the mayor? The first mistake was made by the mayor. The second biggest mistake the commissioner made after that was why he obeyed the illegal order.

The former mayor said that the commissioner of the corporation is a senior IAS officer, he should be aware of the law that it is necessary to follow the rules before breaking any illegal structure. It is mandatory for the corporation to issue notices under section 343/344 of the DMC Act in case of action against illegal constructions. The hasty action taken in Jahangirpuri was a clear violation of the law. The victims were not given a chance to present their case, which is required by the Corporation Act.

He said that the structures constructed before 2014 in the unapproved colonies and the structures constructed in rural population and other areas are protected from any action under the NCT special law approved by the Parliament and it will continue till 31 December 2023. Is workable How can a bulldozer be operated on a building which is protected under a law passed by Parliament? He said that the incident of Jahangirpuri had proved that rule of law had ended in this country.

The Congress leader said that Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal has also been exposed in this case. The corporation had also issued a letter seeking the cooperation of the PWD for the operation, while the PWD comes under the Delhi government. Kejriwal should have intervened and stopped the PWD from being part of this illegal operation but he remained silent.

He said that the manner in which bulldozers are being illegally used on the houses of a particular community in different parts of the country including Delhi is a dangerous sign for our democratic structure. Civil society has to come forward in this matter, otherwise this beautiful lawn, built with centuries of hard work, could suffer irreparable damage.
