Indian wrestler Anshu Malik took the silver in the women’s 57kg freestyle at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Friday. She lost to defending champion Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye of Nigeria 7-3 in the top match and celebrated with a song.
The Nigerian wrestler, a three-time CWG winner, dominated the first period as she won four points, pulled Anshu twice and took technical points. Anshu launched some desperate attacks in the second period as she got 1 point followed by a 2 point elimination.
The Nigerian, taking advantage of Anshu’s aggressive tactics, counterattacked and earned three points – two for severing the service. With only seconds left on the clock, Anshu launched a desperate attack and carried out a takedown, but was denied points on resumption because she could not fully execute the attack.
She left the rug with tears in her eyes because it wasn’t the Christmas present she wanted to give herself and that too in her first pregnancy.
