Indian wrestler Anshu Malik took the silver in the women’s 57kg freestyle at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Friday. She lost to defending champion Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye of Nigeria 7-3 in the top match and celebrated with a song.

The Nigerian wrestler, a three-time CWG winner, dominated the first period as she won four points, pulled Anshu twice and took technical points. Anshu launched some desperate attacks in the second period as she got 1 point followed by a 2 point elimination.

The Nigerian, taking advantage of Anshu’s aggressive tactics, counterattacked and earned three points – two for severing the service. With only seconds left on the clock, Anshu launched a desperate attack and carried out a takedown, but was denied points on resumption because she could not fully execute the attack.

She left the rug with tears in her eyes because it wasn’t the Christmas present she wanted to give herself and that too in her first pregnancy.

The 21-year-old defeated Australia’s Irene Simonides 10-0 via technical supremacy fairly easily in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, she defeated Sri Lanka’s Nithmi Purututedge 10-0 via technical superiority and that too in just over a minute.

Earlier on Friday, wrestling competitions at the Victoria Park Arena in Coventry were halted due to safety concerns. An official, who asked not to be identified, said the Organizing Committee for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham had temporarily suspended wrestling competitions for some time to conduct some safety and security training.

Anshu Malik, who hails from a group of wrestlers, took the silver medal at the Oslo World Championships in 2021.

The daughter of international wrestler Dharamvir Malik, Anshu won three medals in the Cadet Wrestling Championship, in the 60kg category gold in 2017 with bronze in 2016 and 2018.
