Chennai: The customs authorities at Chennai Airport have recovered the ancient Shivalingam statue along with the Nagabharanam statue, dating from the early 19th century, which was bound for the United States.
The department, based on specific input, intercepted an export shipment destined for the United States. While the export documents referred to the idol purchased at Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, the source did not provide the mandatory certification from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), according to a press release.
A copper idol with a weight of 4.56 kg and a height of 36 cm was obtained from an individual in Kallakurichi.
Customs authorities referred to the ASI team of experts who confirmed upon examining the idol that it had an ancient history dating back to the early 19th century.
The statement stated that the idol was seized with other items under the relevant sections of the Customs Act and an investigation is underway.
