Bilawal announced a 25% increase in BISP scholarship amount
KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday said that there will be an immediate 25 percent increase in the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) scholarship amount.
He said the provision of relief money by the Sindh government to flood-affected small farmers would also be expedited. He said that the PPP policy is based on delivering justice to the common man.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of dynamic registration of deserving women under BISP through NADRA, the foreign minister said that the concept of this revolutionary program was given by Shahid Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in her manifesto in view of poverty, inflation and economic crisis in the country.
He said the aim of Benazir Income Support Program is to revolutionize the lives of the weakest women in the country. Bilawal said that when this program started, the country’s bureaucracy, opposition politicians and so-called intellectuals were against it. Before the start of BISP, our opponents used to say that they were making beggars of the people.
Rs 1000 may not mean much to many people, but the same Rs 1000 received under the Benazir Income Support Program can change the fortunes of a poor person, child or mother.
The Foreign Minister said that during his presidency, President Asif Ali Zardari fought against the entire system of implementing the Benazir Income Support Program and by holding meetings every week at the Presidential House, poor women across the country were given money for assistance within one year.
He said that they have made BISP the most transparent institution. International organizations, including the United Nations, appreciate the BISP and its transparency. PPP president said that there are two types of political parties in the world. The first type of party says that if the rich get richer, they will provide employment to more people, while the second type of party believes that no matter how rich the rich get, their scope for providing employment is still the same and limited.
Bilawal said he noticed that richer men were mostly stingy. He said that BISP is not only running a women’s home, but small businesses are also running along with it. Even today, there is inflation, unemployment and an economic crisis in the country.
In these circumstances, in the light of the PPP philosophy, the amount of the Benazir Income Support Program as well as the number of beneficiaries should be increased, as it is a comprehensive tool to reduce poverty in the country, he added.
The PPP president said it was sad to point out that Imran Khan during his tenure was saying that he did not come to the government to see the prices of tomatoes and onions. But we must also see the prices of tomatoes and onions because we are in the government to give relief to the common man.
Bilawal said it was as a result of the prayers of the deserving women of the Benazir Income Support Program that the conspirators against this program failed and this revolutionary program continued.
The Foreign Minister also appreciated the services of the German Ambassador in relation to the flood victims and the BISP.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and BISP Chairperson Shazia Atta Marri and others also spoke on the occasion.-NNI
