After facing attacks from the opposition for inaction against Amrital Singh, the Punjab government on Saturday found support from the opposition Congress as police launched a massive drive to arrest Waris chief Punjab De and members of his group. However, Shiromani Akali Dal (USA), remained silent.
Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Sukhinder Singh Randhawa called the police crackdown a “rather late but welcome step”. He urged the people of Punjab to maintain peace and not believe rumours.
State Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Waring trained his guns at Amritpal and said that true Sikhs do not run away.
“Though Punjab Police was forced to take this action but finally taking action,” he tweeted.
Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu took a dig at the preacher for running away from the police. “The one who wanted the sons of the mothers to be killed runs away like a coward.” This man provokes the youth to take up arms and sacrifice themselves for Khalistan. Now, look at it. “He is running to save his life,” says Bitu in the video message.
Incidentally, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa remained silent on the issue.
BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal also welcomed the police action. He said that Amritpal is an enemy of the country and strict action should be taken against him.
The Shiromani Akali Dal kept the development quiet. No announcement was made by the party or its leaders.
