CWG 2022: Priyanka Goswami and Avinash Sable win silver in race walk, steeplechase MIGMG News

Birmingham: Priyanka Goswami won silver in the 10,000m on foot while Avinash Sable finished second in the steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday. Goswami made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in a race walk. Sable broke his own national record to win the silver medal in the men’s 3000m hurdles.

With the two silvers, the Indian athletics team’s medal count rose to four, surpassing the figure at the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast, where the country won gold, silver and bronze medals in both track and field.

Goswami clocked his personal best time of 43:38.83 seconds to finish second behind Jemima Montag (42:34.30) of Australia. Kenya’s Emily Wamusi Njie (43:50.86) won the bronze.

Sable, the son of a farmer from Mandwa village in Bid district of Maharashtra and an army man, was content with winning the bronze medal in the World Championship Constellations Kipruto of Kenya who finished sixth with a time of 8:34.96.

The Chairperson also expressed her best wishes to Sable: “Congratulations to Avinash Sable for winning the silver medal in the steeplechase at #CommonwealthGames. You have consistently worked to up your performance and it is an inspiring aspect of your success. Best wishes for your future endeavours.”

The other Indian in the fight, Bhauna Ghat finished eighth and last with a personal best time of 47:14.13. Harminder Singh was the first Indian to win a race walking medal – bronze – in the 20 km event at the 2010 CWG in Delhi.
