“When students leave their homes, it is the responsibility of educational institutions to establish a bond of institutional friendship with students. We also have to realize that different students face different challenges. “Only recently I read about the suicide of a Dalit student at IIT Bombay, reminiscent of the suicide of an Adivasi studying in a national-level university… last year,” he said.
The Chief Justice added that my heart goes out to the family members of these students, but I also wondered where our institutions are going wrong, that students are being forced to give up their precious lives. “In this instance, incidents of suicides of students from marginalized communities are becoming common. “These numbers are not just statistics, they are sometimes stories of a century-long struggle,” he said.
Justice Chandrachud further added that Professor Sukhdev Thorat, one of our senior educationists in the country, observed that most of the students who died of suicide were Dalits and Adivasis and this shows a pattern that we must reexamine.
