Representative, Pune: Upcoming Municipalities by the State Government; Also, within hours of promulgating the ordinance to change the number of corporators (members) in local body elections, the State Election Commission suspended all election processes. The Pune Municipal Corporation also postponed the publication of the Ordinance for Other Backward Classes reservation on Friday morning.

After the transfer of power in the state, the Eknath Shinde government made significant changes in the number of corporators in the municipalities in the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. The decision taken by the Mahavikas Aghadi government in September last year has therefore been cancelled. The ordinance of the new changes made by the state government was released on Thursday night. After this ordinance was sent to the State Election Commission, the Commission also sent a letter to the 23 municipal commissioners of the state and ordered them to suspend the ongoing election process.

‘Constituency composition done by the State Election Commission so far; Also, all the procedures of reservation have been canceled and a provision has been made to start this process afresh,’ clear instructions have been given to all the Municipal Corporations. Due to these orders given by the commission, the entire process of election of 14 municipalities has been cancelled. The Pune Municipal Corporation had conducted the lottery for ‘OBC’ reservation last week. Objections were called according to this draw. The OBC reservation ordinance was to be announced on Friday after deciding on these objections. For that, the appropriate information was sent to the Government Mint at Yerwada. However, after receiving urgent instructions from the State Election Commission, the head of the election department, Dr. Yashwant Mane has sent a letter to the mint to suspend the publication of the ordinance and senior officials informed that the process has been suspended.

Municipalities where elections have been postponed

Municipalities of Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Vasai-Virar, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan Dombivli, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Amravati, Akola, Nagpur and Aurangabad are being looked after by the administrator. All the Municipal Corporations except Aurangabad have completed their preparations for the elections. Preparations are underway for the municipal elections of Latur, Parbhani, Chandrapur, Malegaon, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mira Bhayander and Nanded Vaghela.

Seven corporators will be reduced in Pune

– Mahavikas Aghadi decided to contest the elections according to the three-member ward structure.

– The Shinde government decided to contest the elections as per the four-member ward structure as in 2017.

– According to the decision of the Shinde government, the minimum number of corporators will be 161 in municipalities with a population of more than 30 lakhs.

– According to the decision of the Mahavikas Aghdi government, the minimum number of corporators in municipalities with a population of more than 30 lakhs was increased to 168.

– Due to the new decision, seven corporators will be reduced in Pune Municipal Corporation.

– Since the corporators will decrease, there is a great possibility of re-organizing the ward structure.
