Summer onion harvesting is in full swing. Onion harvesting and pruning are being done in full sun. Therefore, as soon as the arrival of onion starts, it will directly affect the rate. At present, onion is fetching Rs 4 to 5 per kg in the wholesale market. From onion cultivation to harvesting, farmers have to spend more.

At the beginning of the season, the same onion has been sold at Rs 3o to Rs 40 per kg. Nature’s whimsy is such that onion prices have gone up due to such affordability of onions, but now due to climate change, the question remains whether to sell or not. Due to the decline in production due to nature and sometimes irregularity in market prices, the farmer is suffering.

Although there is no price in the wholesale market, the trader is making more profit through retailers. Farmers, however, have to sell at a paltry price.

The government also left the farmers in the lurch

The government is expected to help farmers in adverse conditions. However, over the last few years, government policies have hit farmers hard. At other times, if the price of onion goes up, Nafed sells onion so that consumers can buy it. However, now that farmers are getting lower rates, it is being ignored as NAFED is buying onions at higher prices. The government needs to raise the farmers when they are exhausted.

Request for grant money

As onion prices fall, the government needs to provide subsidy to onion growers to reduce the cost of planting and labor. The demand for this has been on the rise for the last several days. The onion growers’ association has demanded a guarantee of Rs 30 per kg.
