So onion farmers are now going to serve the common people and the government. The organization has decided to take this decision due to the declining rate.

Record production and low prices

A record increase in summer onion production was due to the favorable climate and the increase in cultivated area. Although there has been an increase in production, there has been no increase in onion prices since the last six months. At present, the price of onion is 1 thousand to 1 thousand 500 rupees per quintal. Moreover, farmers have stored onions in anticipation of higher prices. Farmers are not getting fair price due to increase in supply. According to government data, more than 317 lakh tonnes of onions have been produced in the country. This production is more than 51 lakh tonnes more than last year.

Decline in exports too

Farmers get more rate from onion export. However, there is no expected change in export policy. Moreover, the 10% onion export incentive scheme implemented by the central government for onion exporters has been closed for the last two years. Due to lack of demand for Indian onion abroad, exports have also decreased. In the financial year 2021-22, only 15.37 lakh tonnes of onions were exported. Farmers’ organizations are being demanded to promote onion exports. Along with increasing production, there is a demand for good market and guaranteed price for onion.

Onion sales ‘break’

After at least four months, why is there a need for an increase in onion prices? However, the rate of decline continues. Therefore, the Onion Producers Association has taken a unique decision. The demand is that onion should get a price of at least 25 rupees per kg. Otherwise, the supply of onion will be stopped from August 16. Farmers cannot afford the cost of onion production due to the current price. Moreover, if the prices remain the same, the price situation will be even worse when the onion from Kharip comes to the market tomorrow. Therefore, Bharat Dighole of the State Producers’ Association has said that if the prices are increased till August 16, otherwise they will not be allowed to bring onion to the market.
