A UAE-based Pakistani woman who helped authorities arrest the main suspect in her father’s murder said she was the victim of a “small social media campaign” that began soon after her arrest.

Maham Amjad, who works in fashion and real estate in Dubai, said more than 300 accounts on various social media platforms targeted her.

It happened days after Interpol arrested Syed Taqi Haider Shah, she said, adding that these accounts were defaming and threatening her. “The relevant authorities have been informed of the threats and they are investigating,” she said.

29-year-old Maham’s father, Mohammed Ahmed Amjad, was the regional head for the Sindh and Balochistan regions at the State Life Insurance Company. He was shot dead on August 26, 2008 at the headquarters located on II Chundrigarh Road. The police complaint said Amjad was investigating allegations of corruption against Shah, who was a sales manager there.

The daughter claims that her father was killed by the Shah. She says State Life management refused to help the family file a police report. Eventually an FIR was registered at the Mitadar police station, with Amjad’s assistant the witness identifying Shah as the killer.

Maham said several attempts to contact State Life management to secure evidence related to the killing also failed, while the original file in police records disappeared.

She said that she was only 15 years old at the time of the murder, while her elder was 19 years old and her mother was a housewife. “We were under constant threat. Three years after the murder, we had to move to Lahore and lived there under an assumed identity,” she said.

But things have now changed and Maham is campaigning loudly on social media to bring justice to her father’s killer.

She was also instrumental in arresting the suspect after finding Shah’s profile on the LinkedIn networking site. The profile contained his work experience, which coincided with the time her father worked there.

She then contacted her father’s friend who told her that it was the same Taki Haider Shah responsible for her father’s gruesome murder. She shared the details with relevant authorities, including in Pakistan, resulting in an Interpol “red alert” and subsequent arrest.

After his arrest, Maham said on social media that the extradition process was being unnecessarily delayed. Police have since said they have submitted the necessary documents for Shah’s extradition.

She collected the court and police files from Pakistan through her contacts and the man was arrested after she secured the evidence, she tweeted.

“It took me 15 years to have a voice,” Amjad said in a Twitter video last October, when he first sought help in the case.

In a tweet on Thursday, she thanked Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for ensuring the extradition documents reached Dubai authorities.

A team of Pakistani officials would soon bring him back to Karachi where his trial was expected to begin soon, Baloch said.
