If Williams makes it past a qualifying match in her first-round match, she will face either Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic or veteran and former world number one Victoria Azarenka in the second round.

Williams’ tough quarter of the draw released on Friday also included current world number one Ega Sweetek, four-times major champion Naomi Osaka and Canadian teen Laila Fernandez.

A three-time event winner and finalist through 2019, she will be unseeded this time.

The American, who turns 41 next month, is back on the court after a year off the court at Wimbledon in June, suffering a second consecutive first-round exit on Center Court, which she won seven times.

The main draw for the National Bank Open begins in Toronto on August 15, after which Williams is expected to compete at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati before heading to New York for the US Open, which begins August 29.
