Mumbai: Shiv Sena’s Adhu Thackeray faction suffered a setback when newly elected Speaker Rahul Nawarikar sacked Ajay Chaudhry from the post of Shiv Sena’s legislative leader. The decision to fire Chaudhry was taken late Sunday night. At the same time, Eknath Shinde was reinstated as the leader of the Legislative Party.
In addition, the appointment of Sunil Prabhu as the Chief Whip has been canceled and Bharat Gogawale has been given the responsibility. Sunil Prabhu belongs to the Shiv Sena’s Adhu Thackeray faction while Bharat belongs to the Shinde faction. The Speaker has taken this decision just before the floor test in the Assembly.
This is another major blow to the Shiv Sena after its defeat in the election of the Speaker of the Assembly. The ruling has added to Shiv Sena’s legal woes. Because if the Chief Whip’s order is violated, the legislators can be disqualified.
It may be recalled that Rahul Narvikar, a BJP and Shinde faction candidate, defeated Rajan Salvi of Shiv Sena in the election for the post of Speaker. Narvikar got 164 votes while Salvi got only 107 votes. There will be a floor test in the Assembly today, in which Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will have to prove his majority.
