The Congress approved several major changes in its Constitution during the 85th plenary session in Raipur in Chhattisgarh, including reservation of 50 per cent seats for Dalits, tribals, OBCs, minorities, women and youth, digital membership and inclusion of transgenders.

The Constitution Amendment Commission headed by Ambika Soni in a plenary session put 85 amendments to the party constitution. Following which, committee convener Randeep Surjewala announced six major amendments to the Constitution.

They include:

  • CWC members will be increased to 35 from 25 and there will be 50 per cent reservation for SC, ST, OBC, minorities, youth and women

  • 50 percent reservation in all commissions for SC, ST and OBC

  • Digital membership will be primary

  • Inclusion of mother’s and wife’s name in membership forms, in addition to transgender as an additional category

  • One AICC member should be elected for every 6 PCC delegates

  • All elected Congress representatives will automatically be delegates to block, district and state level committees

The amendments state that there should be 50 per cent reservation for persons below 50 years of age at all levels from mandal to state, as well as women, in both reserved and unreserved categories in the remaining 50 per cent.

Welcoming the move, Uttar Pradesh Congress worker Sadaf Jafar pointed out that empowering women means empowering society. “When women are empowered politically, they will fight for themselves and for others.” Gender parity in the political set-up ensures gender equality in the society,” said Jafar, who was the Congress candidate from the Lucknow Central Assembly constituency for the 2022 state elections. .

This decision of the Congress, Jafar believes, will force other political parties to follow suit. This will bring women, their aspirations and their future to center stage.

The constitution also included, as first mentioned at Chintan Shivir in Udaipur, 50 percent of all delegates and office-bearers in Central Congress Committees, Block/City Congress Committees, District Congress Committees and Pradesh Congress Committees would be reserved. for SC/ST /OBC/minorities, half of whom will be members of KS/MK.
