New Delhi: Corruption charges against Pakistan’s political leaders are not new, and amid the impending ouster of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi’s name is now embroiled in a scandal. Imran Khan’s third wife, Bushra, who has managed to stay out of the limelight unlike his previous wives, has been linked to corruption allegations involving her friend Farah Khan.
Bushra has become a mystery, wearing a burqa and often staying indoors. However, she was brought to the public’s attention as her friend Farah Khan was accused of taking money to cover relocations and appointments of bureaucrats from Punjab province.
Farah left for Dubai while her husband Ahsan Jamil Gujar before her went to the United States, both allegedly never returning.
Pakistani media are highlighting how a suitcase pictured next to Farah on a plane, allegedly worth US$90,000, which they say could exemplify the scale of corruption and the money she was able to raise through the dealings.
Pakistani journalist Hamzah Amir, in a conversation with India Forward, said the corruption allegations linking Farah and Bushra involve another scandal, one where the role of former Punjab Chief Minister Osman Buzdar is being questioned.
Good news for Punjab
Each of these claims is related to the province of Punjab, where the Pakpatan region to which Bushra belonged is located. Pakpattan is the seat of the Sufi order in Pakistan, and Bushra happens to be a Sufi leader and is said to have met Imran because of his interest in Sufism. She became his spiritual guide, reportedly, even predicting and guiding him in his political decisions.
When Imran first met Bushra, she was married to Khawar Farid Maneka, a prominent customs official, and the son of politician and former Federal Minister Ghulam Farid Maneka. Bushra is from the Watu clan, to which the Manikas family belongs.
In 2018, Imran’s selection as the chief minister of Punjab province was a controversial man, Osman Bozdar, who was said to be very close to him. The party colleagues themselves were against granting Usman the seat, which has now become more visible as former Punjab Governor and PTI leader Chaudhry Sarwar described Usman as carrying out “unconstitutional” orders.
Sarwar said that options like him, Alim Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, have been sought for Osman. “We said we want to build Naya Pakistan and if Imran Khan thinks Usman Buzdar can do it, we are with him. But the whole country witnessed that chaos. [subsequently] It followed in Punjab. Workers across Pakistan [cabinet] Individuals, [people] From Europe to the UK He wondered if this was the Pakistan we voted for.
In Pakistan, Hamzah said, there was talk that Usman was just CM’s face, but Farah, Bushra’s close assistant was the woman behind the face, who led the charge.
But these points are only allegations so far and have not been proven. Another campaign to target Imran Khan appears as a corrupt person. They also say that Osman, the chairman of the Punjab provincial council, was a chosen one who was at the behest of Bushra Bibi and her ex-husband, and appeared to be a puppet, and the opposition says Farah was acting as the hidden prime minister, shooting the footage,” he said.
Disclosures by Alim Khan, a disgruntled PTI member of the Punjab Assembly, about Farah’s departure from Pakistan and about alleged corruption opened a supposed Pandora’s Box.
Alim told the media that once the bureaucrats who profited from the transactions are arrested, everything will come to light, including where Farah transferred the money.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif, deputy chair of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Sharif – the daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who himself is facing corruption charges that led to his stepping down from the post in 2017, alleged that Farah received funds to transport and deploy the officers according to their choice.
“The mother of all Rs 6 billion remittance and remittance scandals linked to Banigala. In the coming days, shocking evidence will emerge. Maryam Nawaz was quoted by Dawn News as saying that Imran Khan fears that once he is out of power his thefts will be exposed.” Banegala is where the Prime Minister resides.
The scandal, whether politically motivated, is in keeping with the tradition of accusing Pakistan’s leaders of corruption, intensifying the quarrel, Imran’s wife Bushra.
