The United States Embassy in Islamabad on Friday felicitated newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza.

The United States reiterated its commitment to work with Pakistan’s elected leaders, the military leadership, and a variety of civil society partners.

“The US mission congratulates the new Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Asim Munir, and the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza,” they wrote on their official Twitter page.

It further hoped to advance common interests in trade and investment, health security, climate change, inclusive governance and regional security.

“We are committed to working with Pakistan’s elected leaders, its military leadership, and various civil society partners to advance shared interests in trade and investment, health security, climate change, inclusive governance, and regional security,” the US embassy added.

The announcement of the new appointments was announced a day earlier by Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb after a special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz. Unlike in the past, the Government did not wait for the President to sign the summary to announce the decision.

The announcement before the president gave his assent appeared to be a deliberate move by the government to prevent any move by the president that could derail the process.
