Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand, who was elected Vice-President of FIFA, said on Monday that it was time to do more for the sport in the country.

“We will work as a team…especially do more for India. There are plans to hold more tournaments. Our guys are playing very well. We have to use that momentum and do something.”

“We have to see what we can do in cooperation with the Tamil Nadu government,” Anand, who was part of the team of incumbent federation president Dvorkovic that ran for the World Chess Council elections, told reporters here.

Dvorkovic convincingly won the election on Sunday to retain his position.

“It is a good time for India, when everyone is talking about chess to do more for the sport,” said the five-time world champion, and confirmed the presence of many players from Tamil Nadu in the various Indian teams competing in the 44th Olympiad.

Anand also said he was happy that the Olympics was being held in Chennai and added that “(the Olympics) was a huge success.”

When asked about his vision for India now that he has been elected vice president of the federation, he spoke about the need to push the game into the various schools and other programs already in place.

“In a sense, we’re already one of the best (chess) countries. Now we’re one of the best organized countries…with the Olympics. The next step is figuring out how to cover the gaps. We need to push it into the schools and social programs that the president talked about.”

“We are strong in some areas. Very happy with the way this Olympiad has been organized.”

On his part, Dvorkovic, who was re-elected as the federation president for a second term, thanked the Tamil Nadu government for its efforts to help organize the Olympics, a masterpiece of sport.

He said he wanted to continue what happened in his first term.

We want to continue what has happened for four years now. Compared to four years ago when we started from scratch.

“We have something to work on. Chess should be much stronger in the next few years. Chess in schools, chess for people and promotion of chess for women are among the priorities,” said Dvorkovich, the former Russian prime minister.
