The World Day of Non-Governmental Organizations is being celebrated around the world today. Internationally, the day started on 27 February 2014 in Finland to recognize and honor all non-governmental and non-profit organizations and the people behind them who work throughout the year. According to the World NGO Day website, there are currently more than 10 million non-governmental and non-profit organizations operating worldwide.
More than 5 crore people are associated with these organizations as volunteers and render services to various areas of humanity. While this day is celebrated in more than 96 countries.
On the other hand, regarding this day, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, says that human rights defenders risk their lives to do their work and face threats, including murder and violent attacks.
He added that this practice threatens the existence of civil society which ultimately undermines peace, sustainable development and the achievement of all human rights.
