Tottenham Hotspur beat Southampton 4-1 to start their Premier League campaign

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed their credentials as a team capable of challenging the Premier League title with a 4-1 victory over Southampton to kick-start their campaign on Saturday.

The hosts fell to a shot from James Ward-Prowse in the 12th minute, but they dominated all the goals, scoring goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Dejan Kulusevsky to win.

Southampton’s lead lasted only nine minutes before Sessegnon headed past Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Pazono for the first time from Kulusevsky’s cross.

Dier considered Son Heung-min’s header cross in the 31st minute to put Spurs ahead, and the hosts should have been out of sight before the first half.

Muhammed Salisu botched Emerson Royal’s cross into his net in the 61st minute, and two minutes later Royal sent the impressive Kolosevsky to lead a fine finish behind Pazono whose saves kept the score respectable.

It was a statement from Spurs, who didn’t even need the usual goal contributions like last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner Son or Harry Kane – both of whom have had many chances to open up this season’s goal list.

Spurs finished the match by controlling the pace, and coach Antonio Conte made his debut with new signings Ivan Perisic and Yves Bisuma as second-half substitutes.

Midfielder Soma enjoyed the liveliness, receiving a yellow card and then almost scoring in the last minute.
