Shree Krishna, a Hindu deity, was born in Mathura during the month of Bhadrapada, on the Ashtami date which falls in August or September. Janmashtami is celebrated with great pomp on the occasion of his birth. Lord Krishna’s uncle Kansa had his parents Vasudev and Devaki imprisoned after learning that Devaki’s eighth son would be the cause of his death.

When Shree Krishna was born, Vasudev managed to escape from the prison and brought him down along with Yashoda and Nanda Baba who lived in Gokul. Since he loved butter in his childhood, dahi handi is practiced across the country on this special day. In this case, a handi (bowl) filled with butter is tied at a height with a rope. Groups of people form a pyramid-like structure to reach the top and break the pot to unleash the butter.
