On the other hand, Hyderabad has suffered its seventh defeat in 12 matches and has slipped to eighth position.
Playing at number seven, Russell scored 49 not out off 28 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes and gave Kolkata a fightable score which was ultimately the match winner. Russell hit three of his four sixes off spinner Washington Sundar in the last over of the innings. He ended the innings with a six off the last ball of the innings.
Russell shared a 63-run stand with Sam Billings for the sixth wicket. Billings hit three fours and a six in 34 off 29 balls. Opener Ajinkya Rahane scored 28 off 24 balls with the help of three sixes and Nitish Rana scored 26 off 16 balls with the help of three sixes. Captain Shriyas Air scored 15 off nine balls with the help of two fours.
Kolkata fast bowler Baz Imran Malik took three wickets for 33 runs.
